Scientific Explanation of the Benefits of Massage
The reputation of massage is growing in the health field due to the many surprising benefits that are turning up.
Scientists
have found that massage reduces blood pressure and harmful stress hormones, and
boosts the immune system and mood-elevating brain chemicals such as serotonin.
Massage eases inflammation in and around sprains (after the first day or two), and presses sludgy, heavy lymphatic fluids along lymphatic veins to the lymph nodes where they are eaten and digested by “good-guy” bacteria. Lymphatic fluids are waste products and toxic substances that are too large to enter the normal circulation system of veins and arteries, so a special system, the lymph system, handles the overflow.
Massage helps the body to release blockages so that the systems flow freely together once more, bringing healing, health and balance to the entire being. All massage modalities have value. Some techniques press hard as in deep tissue bodywork; others press lightly as in lymphatic drainage.
